Closet Confessionals: Shopping for Men
Closet Confessionals: Shopping for Men

GotStyle is one of Canada’s premiere retail destinations for men’s style. Offering everything from streetwear to bespoke tailoring and a full service barbershop at its new landmark shop adjacent to the oh-so-stylish Thompson hotel in Toronto’s vibrant King West neighbourhood, GotStyle aims provide modern men with the wardrobe necessary for leading a style-inclined lifestyle.

GotStyle’s founder, Melissa Austria, opened the concept shop six years ago driven by her experience and understanding of menswear and its consumer. “During my time as a Brand and Sales manager for a number of designer menswear brands, I noticed a growing appetite for menswear beyond the traditional suit and Toronto’s menswear offerings only catered the high and low ends of the menswear spectrum – nor was any shop offering the head-to-toe concept coupling a barbershop service with clothing and accessories.”

Austria, along with her sales team, places emphasis on service and counsel to her customers and offered G ROOM insights to the mysterious male shopper:

  • Men often get stuck in a rut – wearing the same look they did during a favourite point in their lives long after its past.
  • Men are as insecure about their bodies as women are.
  • Men’s attitudes toward dressing are changing. They understand that fit has evolved from their father’s boxy cuts and modern, flattering clothes have a positive impact.
  • Men like real-world application. GotStyle is not divided by brand – the shop is set up for men to easily identify and understand what clothes are appropriate for daytime (aka brunch wear), social (nightlife clothes), and business (suits).

Most recently Austria staged an event showcasing GotStyle’s fall/winter 2010 offerings with an over-the-top event sponsored by Gillette, Braun and Old Spice among others. The night saw 400+ guests in attendance and featured celebrity models, a burlesque performance, and live music.

GotStyle’s success hasn’t gone without notice; the menswear shop has received a flurry of acclaim from top men’s media outlets in Canada and the US. Austria attributes the success to “loving what you do and really being into helping men look better.”
