King Camp Gillette, a salesman from Baltimore, spurred the creation of the world-famous Gillette razor manufacturing company. Gillette developed his breakthrough innovation, the disposable safety razor blade, in 1901. He was in his 40s at the time, and he had followed his instinct to create a product that people couldn't live without. From that invention, King Gillette set in motion over a century worth of shaving advances that continue today–so much so that over 600 million men around the world shave with Gillette.
- Despite the numerous breakthroughs (including the Gillette Thin Blade, Blue Blade dispenser and the adjustable razor) in the first 70 years after incorporation, the innovation pace accelerated noticeably in the 1970's:
- 1971: Gillette produced the Trac II, the first twin blade shaving system.
- 1976: Gillette's introduced the Atra / Contour system the first twin-blade shaving cartridge with a pivoting head, which allowed the blades to better follow the contours of the face for a closer shave.
- 1985: Gillette introduced Atra Plus / Contour Plus, the first razor with a lubricating strip.
- 1990: Gillette launches Sensor–the first razor with twin blades individually mounted on highly-responsive springs that automatically adjust to contours of every face.
- 1998: Gillette's reveals MACH3, offering three progressively aligned blades, for an even smoother, closer shave.
- 2004: Gillette introduced M3Power–the world's first wet shaving system to use battery technology–providing micro-pulses which help improve razor glide for a more comfortable shave.
- 2006: Gillette Fusion razors debut—in Manual and Power versions. They feature five blades and meet or beat the MACH3 on every attribute and provide Gillette's Closest and Most Comfortable Shave Ever.
The 1.5 million-square-foot Gillette factory remains where it was born—in South Boston (Massachusetts), where machines assemble up to 600 cartridges a minute. Development of Gillette products is done predominately in South Boston (also known as "World Shaving Headquarters") and The Gillette Technology Centre in Reading, UK. Every year, tens of thousands of testers shave with Gillette products and prototypes in the name of science, exploring new frontiers in hair removal technology and pursuing Gillette's unofficial motto, "There is a better way to shave and we will find it."
