The Medulla is the innermost layer of hair strands. It lies beneath the cortex, in the middle, and cuticle on the outside. Not all hair has a medulla – usually very fine or thin hair is missing that central layer. But beard hair usually contains very coarse and strong medullas, resulting in thicker facial hair.
