- 1. What the main pressures you face as a journalist?
- The obvious answer is deadlines, but there are other big pressures too - the constant need to come up with fresh, creative ideas and angles on new stories. Even if it's the most interesting story in the world, you still need to entice the reader in with the right image. Otherwise, they will simply turn the page.
- 2. Describe an average day in your profession
- An average day would be spent in the office from about 9.30am until 7pm, researching, writing and commissioning stories. The evening will usually involve a launch party of some kind - normally for a fashion label, sportswear brand or drinks company. Having said that, other working days recently have included everything from interviewing leading sportswomen to climbing ice walls in Antarctica.
- 3. How do you notice the pressures you face affecting the way you act and perform?
- The more stressed I get, the more I sweat, and the more green tea I drink. I do find that I work better under pressure, as it lends a focus and urgency to the task, which often brings out better results.
- 4. In a pressured situation, what gives you the winning edge to succeed?
- Perseverance, perspective, confidence and experience. Plus a healthy fear of failure - and a big box of green tea.
- 5. What has been the most pressured moment of your career?
- One that sticks out in my mind was when I got sent to train with cosmonauts at the Yuri Gagarin Space Centre in Moscow. We went up in a parabolic flight known as 'The Vomit Comet' to experience weightlessness. Trying to take notes - and hold down my breakfast - while flying around inside an aeroplane was very difficult!
- 6. What's your advice to the men wanting to get into your profession?
- Work hard, persevere, and try to make as many friends and contacts in as many different walks of life as possible. You never know when you might be writing a story about that subject in the future and they will become very useful.
- 7. How important is it to look good and give the right impression in your profession?
- It's absolutely, categorically fundamental. You need to present the right impression to everybody you meet - at lunches, parties or in an interview situation, because you're not only representing yourself, you're also representing your magazine and what it stands for.
